Dress Code 2026-2027

Dress Code

Midwest Dance Center has a required dress code for every class and level during our school-year session. All dancers must arrive in the correct attire, shoes, and hairstyle in order to participate in class.

A consistent dress code helps dancers move safely, allows instructors to clearly see posture and alignment, and creates a focused, professional classroom environment.

Sizing Information

Leotards and tights generally run true to size. Dance shoes often do not!

Please carefully review the sizing chart listed for each individual shoe style before ordering. Different brands and styles may fit differently from your child’s everyday shoe size.

Important Dress Code Requirement

Your child’s required leotard or dance dress must be purchased through the MDC Nimbly store using the link below.

Leotards and dance dresses purchased from Amazon, Walmart, Target, or other retailers will not be accepted as substitutes, even if they appear similar. Each class has a specific assigned style and color.

Dress Code FAQs

Does my child need a specific leotard?

Yes! Every class has a specific leotard or dance dress that must be ordered through our Nimbly site. This keeps each class coordinated and ensures dancers are wearing attire that is appropriate for their age, level, and style of dance.

Is it the same leotard as last year?

No. All classes have new leotards and dance dresses this year. Every dancer will need to order the item assigned to their current class, even if they participated last season.

Can I purchase shoes and tights somewhere else?

Yes. Shoes and tights may be purchased from another dancewear retailer as long as they match the exact style and color listed in the dress code.

We do not allow dance shoes purchased from Target or Walmart. Capezio and Bloch are both reliable brands to consider when purchasing elsewhere.

Does my child’s hair really need to be in a bun—even when they’re little?

Yes—especially when they’re little!

A secure bun keeps hair out of your dancer’s face so they can see, move, and focus without constantly fixing or touching their hair. It also allows instructors to clearly see the dancer’s head, neck, shoulders, posture, and alignment.

Learning to arrive with properly secured hair also helps our youngest dancers begin developing good classroom habits from the very start.

Where will my order be shipped?

All Nimbly orders will be shipped directly to your home.

Does MDC carry dress code items at the studio?

No. Midwest Dance Center does not keep leotards, tights, shoes, or other dress code items in stock at the studio. All required items must be purchased online before classes begin.

How difficult is sizing?

Leotards and tights are generally fairly true to size. However, dance shoe sizing can vary significantly by brand and style.

Please carefully review the sizing chart provided for each shoe before ordering. Do not assume your dancer will wear the same size as their everyday street shoes.

How quickly will my order arrive?

Orders typically arrive very quickly! The company is located in Illinois and lists an estimated delivery time of 7–10 days. However, many MDC families receive their orders within approximately 2–3 days.

We still recommend ordering early to allow time for exchanges or sizing adjustments before your dancer’s first class.
